Adam and Eve and the Tree of Knowledge

Lesson 1

Scripture:  Genesis 1:26- 31; 2:7-25;-3:1-24

Memory Verse: Genesis 2:9 - “And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”
INTRODUCTION: When God created the earth, He made a beautiful Garden called the Garden of Eden.  He then created man and woman and placed them in this garden to care for and enjoy it.  Their names were Adam and Eve.  The only restriction in the beautiful garden was a certain tree called the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.  (Genesis 2:17) Adam and Eve were not to eat of the fruit of this tree or, God said, “thou shalt surely die.”

IGOD TALKS TO ADAM
God created Adam from the dust of the ground and then breathed into him the breath of life.  Adam was alive and the ONLY living person on the newly created earth.  The only One Adam had to talk to was God.  They walked and talked together every day.  God told Adam  that he could eat from every tree in the Garden except one - the Tree of Knowledge.  God was protecting Adam by telling him not to eat of this tree.

IIADAM TALKS TO EVE
When God saw that Adam was lonely, He said it was not good that Adam was alone.  So, God created for him a wife.  Her name was Eve.  Adam loved Eve and he wanted to protect her.  He told her about the forbidden tree and not to eat of it or even touch it.  Adam and Eve were very happy and talked to each other but still talked to God everyday.
IIITHE SERPENT TALKS TO EVE

One day Eve was walking in the garden without Adam. She was close to the Tree of Knowledge.  She noticed a beautiful creature who talked to her!  This creature was a serpent or snake.  But, really it was Satan disguised as a serpent.  The serpent told Eve that it was really not true about the Tree of Knowledge.  She would not die if she ate from it, but that she would be like a god.  Satan was lying to Eve for when God says something, it is TRUE!  Always believe what God says.  The serpent convinced Eve to eat the fruit from the forbidden tree.  As soon as she did, she knew she had done wrong, she had sinned and disobeyed God.  She knew the serpent was a liar!

IVEVE TALKS TO ADAM

SIN - anything bad that we do; breaking God’s law (I John 3:4)
NOTE: Anything bad we do is sin: lying, stealing, cheating, disobeying, etc.
Be very careful when your friends try to get you to do something wrong.  Those who sin want others to sin with them.  This is what Eve did.  When she found Adam, he was very sad that Eve had eaten of the fruit.  Eve had been tricked by Satan. Eve asked Adam to eat the fruit, too and he did.  Adam was not tricked, he willingly did wrong.

VADAM TALKS TO GOD

As soon as Adam ate the fruit, he, too, knew he had sinned.  He and Eve then tried to hide from God just like a child does when they know they have done wrong.  God, of course, knew where Adam and Eve were and asked them if they had eaten from the Tree.  Adam blamed Eve and Eve blamed the serpent.  Because they disobeyed God, they were not allowed in the garden anymore and had to work to grow food and build a place to live. God still loved Adam and Eve, but because they had sinned, they were punished.  The serpent, too, was punished and had to crawl to his belly from then on and was no longer a beautiful creature.

CONCLUSION: Adam and Eve learned a very hard lesson about being obedient to God.  Their sin had lasting effects on us even today.  You never know what lasting effects YOUR sin may have on someone else.  It is always right to DO right and obey God’s Word.

TEACHER NOTE: Explain that no matter what wrong things a person does, God still loves them and always will.  Present a clear presentation of the Gospel to your class at this time and give opportunity for students to accept Jesus as their Saviour.
